Decade of convening landscape initiatives: Protecting the forest to support communities, ecosystem and tea cultivation

The South West Mau Forest in Kenya covers 60,000 hectares, with 20,000 hectares targeted for restoration. The landscape initiative was created to solve the shared problem of forest degradation. Tea production was reducing due to the lack of rainwater. The local communities were suffering because there wasn’t enough fodder for animals grazing in the forest. There was less water downstream for hydropower generation and drinking water, while the Government departments responsible for protecting the forest had limited capacity to do so effectively.
